On Saturday, 600 people will run for their lives with zombies hot on their heels in Council Bluffs.
The Running Dead 5K Dash and Bash is Saturday. It's a local spinoff of a national racing series.
“There is a national zombie run, but...there's nothing in this area,” said race director Jim Lovely. “We wanted to be the first.”
About 200 volunteers will dress in zombie garb and makeup before taking to the 3.1-mile course and “hunting” runners. Each runner will wear a belt with three red flags attached. Their goal is to cross the finish line with at least one flag.
The Westfair Fairgrounds in Council Bluffs will host the Halloween-themed run. The course is divided into four zones: the livestock building, a lot with junkyard cars, a hilly wooded area and the final stretch.
Zombies will hide behind the built-in obstacles on the terrain. They will hunt as individuals and in packs. “Slow crawlers” will be easier to outrun, and “chasers” will pursue runners more quickly but only for about 20 yards. The zombies won't all appear at once or leave their designated zones.
“It can be for the casual runner who just wants to experience the event, or it can be for an experienced runner who wants to challenge themselves with the added element of someone chasing you,” Lovely said.
“Our goal is to give these runners an experience they've never had before while running a 5K.”
Those who escape the zombies will be eligible for prizes. The $50 registration fee will include race entry, a medal, a “swag bag,” entry to the after party and a free drink. Friends and family can go to the after party for $3.
If you miss online registration, you can register in person the day of the event. You can also email info@therunningdead5K.com to volunteer to be a zombie.
