Tim Miles showed how much he is in tune with Nebraska culture by using his time at Big Ten men's basketball media day to channel Johnny Carson.
The first-year coach drew fond reviews Thursday from attendees at the Chicago event for his sense of humor and quick wit.
“Hey, there's coffee in the back,” he chirped at the sleepy-eyed reporters in the interview room at 8:50 a.m.
Miles said he and Michigan coach John Beilein, both St. Louis Cardinals fans, were talking. Miles stopped in midstream to say: “Apologize to the Cubs fans here. I know we've been doing it to you for a long time.”
Miles finished his session at the podium by pulling out his cellphone and taking a panoramic picture of the room, then posting it to his Twitter account.
All of that action had Miles trending worldwide on Twitter. The brief discussion about his team didn't.
The Huskers, in a poll of 24 veteran beat writers, were picked to finish last by 23 of them. NU has finished last or tied for last in its league two of the past three seasons.
Nebraska opens exhibition play Nov. 7 against Midland. The regular-season opener is Nov. 11 (Sunday) at home against Southern (La.) University — the first of five home games between Nov. 11 and Nov. 24.
