Classes don't begin for another 10 months at a new Omaha middle school, but its new principal already has a long to-do list.
Dan Bartels, currently principal of McMillan Middle School, has been named the new principal of the yet-to-be-named middle school at 132nd and State Streets.
Bartels needs to set up a committee that will help name the school, establish its colors and choose a mascot.
He also has to talk with district officials about choosing the textbooks that sixth- through eighth-graders will use starting next August.
Bartels, who joined OPS in 1996 as an elementary physical education teacher, said he applied for the new job because of the opportunity to lead a school from its genesis.
“The initial decision-making is a tremendous responsibility and a humbling piece for me,” he said.
Bartels, who has led McMillan for the past two school years, told his staff about his job change Tuesday afternoon. He switches roles Oct. 29.
Succeeding Bartels at McMillan in the interim will be Kerry Krause, currently an assistant principal at the school.
