UTICA – The No. 1 team in Class C-2 didn't need any gifts or hand outs on Friday night, but in the first quarter alone the Aquinas Monarchs must have thought Christmas had come early.
Anything that could go wrong for Centennial in their C2-5 District match up did and by the time the end of the first quarter rolled in, the outcome was no longer in doubt as the Aquinas Monarchs took a decisive 57-7 win over the Broncos.
Aquinas moved to 7-0 on the year as they scored on a five-play 31-yard drive, following a 19-yard punt return by Landon Stouffer on the Broncos' first possession. The score was a 10-yard run by Stouffer and the PAT from Stouffer made it 7-0.
On the Broncos' next possession, another three and out, Austin Svoboda blocked the punt of Dakota Wullenwaber and the Monarchs cashed in on just one play from the 12 yard line on a run by quarterback Trev Semrad and with 6:48 to play in the first quarter.
Nothing was going right for the Broncos as a high snap after another three and out gave the Monarchs the ball on the Centennial three yard line and with Seth Hoffman covering the distance in just one play, it was 21-0 and some people had not even gotten comfortable in their seats.
In the first half, Centennial started at their own 20, 20, 26, 24, 20, 5, 12, 20, 19, and 20 yard line. That gave the Broncos an average field position of their own 18 ½ yard line.
The Monarchs on the other hand had a starting field position of the Broncos 29 yard line.
The deepest drive by the Centennial offense in the first half was the Centennial 38 on an 18-yard pass play from quarterback Kyle Gierhan to Aaron DeWaard late in the first half.
In the second quarter Aquinas scored on a 13-yard run by Semrad, a one-yard run from Hoffman, a four-yard run by Svoboda and a 35-yard field goal by Stouffer on the final play of the first half to make the score 44-0 at the break.
The Monarchs scored twice in the third quarter as Matt Jakub scored on a nine-yard run and Eric Kobza went in from 19 yards out.
The Broncos only score was a 21-yard touchdown pass from Gierhan to Logan Clonce in the third quarter. The PAT by Ramon Schellekens made the final 57-7.
Aquinas rushed the ball 47 times for 412 yards and passed it for 16-yards on two of three attempts for a total offense of 428 yards. Stouffer led Aquinas with 72 yards as several backs carried the ball for Aquinas' run game.
The Broncos were 24 carries for just eight yards and Gierhan was six of 17 with one interception for 50 yards. Centennial had a total offense of 58 yards.
The Broncos (4-3) face a tough road test next Thursday night at Archbishop Bergan.
