The flavors of classic Southern desserts are being served in west Omaha with the opening of Gigi's Cupcakes, a Nashville-based franchise shop that serves cupcakes and cupcake-sized cheesecakes.
Gigi's, locally owned by Grant and SuZanne Rogers, offers more than 30 flavors, including Scarlett's Red Velvet, Caramel Sugar Mama, Sweet Potato Pie and Southern Comfort, a pecan pie cupcake.
They're baked in-store and sold in big and mini sizes. SuZanne Rogers said the shop donates unsold cupcakes to hospitals, fire departments and community organizations.
A grand opening is planned from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and will include drawings and a visit from company founder Gina Butler. The store is at 16811 Burke St. Suite 115 in the Village Pointe South shopping center.
Store specializes in oil and vinegar
A new store coming to Rockbrook Village will let customers explore dozens of varieties of oils and vinegars before they buy.
Mark and Jan Leichtle will open Old World Oil & Vinegar around Nov. 1 in the shopping center at 108th Street and West Center Road.
The store aims to educate cooks about the varieties of oils and vinegars and how to use them in different recipes.
“I think people will be surprised at how strong the tastes are,” Mark Leichtle said. “Wow, who would think vinegar could taste like that?”
Old World will offer five or six varieties of unflavored olive oil along with many flavored oils, infused with combinations of herbs, fruits and spices. There also will be an assortment of balsamic vinegars as well as varieties of salts and other cooking staples.
Shoppers can sample the flavors by dipping bread into a cup of oil or just taking a sip. The oil and vinegar will be stored in bulk in large stainless steel vats and the store will bottle it on site for customers.
Boutique opens in old town Elkhorn
Kelli Fuglsang sold her finds on the arts and crafts fair circuit for 18 years, and now has opened her own shop in a renovated church in old town Elkhorn.
This & That & Other Stuff sells home decor, holiday decorations, women's accessories and children's gifts. The shop also provides custom embroidery services such as personalized baby blankets, bridal party gifts and school logos.
The shop is inside Elkhorn's original Bethany Lutheran Church building at 2826 N. Main St., and a recent remodeling left intact original wood floors and tin ceiling tiles.
The shop and several others will be part of a Ladies Day Out event from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.
Cherry Berry expands in Omaha
Cherry Berry self-serve yogurt bar soon will expand from one Omaha location to four and possibly more.
The first location opened in June at 1201 S. 157th St., and the same franchisee, Loren VenHuizen of Sioux Falls, S.D., plans a second location at 14440 F St. in Westport Village.
A different franchisee plans locations at 13110 Birch Drive, near a future Walmart Neighborhood Market, and at 8714 Pacific St. in Countryside Village, according to VenHuizen and city planning documents. VenHuizen said even more locations could be in the works in the future.
“We think Omaha is a great market for frozen yogurt,” VenHuizen said.
Office Depot plans new format store
Office Depot will open a fourth metro-area location in late December, not far from where the chain closed a store in June.
The Office Depot at 72nd and Jones Streets closed because it didn't fit with the retailer's new, smaller store format, a company spokeswoman said this summer. The store was nearly 26,000 square feet; the new format calls for stores of 5,000 to 10,000 square feet.
The new location, at 603 S. 72nd St. in the former home of Schlotzsky's Deli, will open in December, said PJ Sevener, a manager at the Office Depot at 125th Street and West Center Road.
Sephora opens at Westroads
Sephora makeup and skincare shop has opened a fourth metro location, inside the J.C. Penney store at Westroads Mall.
The shop opened Oct. 5, assistant manager Meghan Kohl said.
“It's an awesome location and we're staying fairly busy,” she said.
Other locations are at Village Pointe and inside the J.C. Penney stores in Papillion and Council Bluffs.
