Cole Bonde, a three-sport standout, has been the go-to guy for Bedford this season. The senior leads the 4-3 Bulldogs in rushing and receiving on offense, and he’s the team’s leading tackler. Bonde has rushed for 1,307 yards and has Bedford in the Class A playoff hunt.
Q: Which has the best atmosphere: football Friday, the state wrestling tournament or state track at Drake?
A: I don’t know. When you get to state track and state wrestling, it’s totally different than every Tuesday and Thursday. But I don’t know if anything beats Friday football.
Q: You’ve had some crazy Friday nights lately. How have those been for you?
A: They stay entertaining, that’s for sure. We’ve got a lot of young guys, and it’s really good experience for them for the next few games down the road.
Q: You had some big shoes to fill with 2,000-yard rusher Cody Morris graduating after last season. What did you do to prepare yourself to become the go-to guy this season?
A: I just did what the coaches told me to, and I worked really hard in the weight room.
Q: The coaches like to line you up in different spots on offense. Are the defenses always trying to find out where you are at?
A: They move me from halfback to fullback to tight end. They do that quite a bit. (Defenses) have to find out where I’m at, but then we have Kolten Sefrit, Dylon French and Mason Brown. Then they’re the ones running the ball and scoring touchdowns, and that’s OK with me.
Q: What do you do on Friday to motivate yourself before the game?
A: I usually just hang out with the guys, and we prepare ourselves for the game together.
Q: You’ve got a couple of toughies coming up. Have any thoughts on Madrid and Woodward-Granger?
A: The Madrid game is one we’ve been looking forward to because they got us the last two years. If everybody does their job, it should be a pretty good game. Woodward-Granger will be another really tough game for our last home game.
Q: Your district could have everyone all bunched together. Do you talk about the playoff scenarios?
A: We talk about it, but it’s not all we talk about. We know we have to keep winning games. Our main focus is to keep winning games, and the playoffs will happen however it happens.
Q: Do you have any plans for after high school yet?
A: Not complete plans, but I would like to maybe go play football somewhere.
