A Papillion couple has been cited on charges of contributing to the delinquency of a minor in connection with a crash that killed a La Vista teenager.
Papillion Police Lt. Chris Whitted said David Newell, 43, and Donna Newell, 42, were ticketed following an investigation into the Sept. 29 death of Jon Zadina. The maximum penalty for the misdemeanor charge is one year imprisonment and a $1,000 fine.
Whitted said police determined that Zadina consumed alcoholic beverages at the Newell home at 814 E. Cary St. the night he was killed in a one-vehicle accident.
Zadina, 18, was driving at a high-rate of speed when his 2003 Ford Mustang lost control and crashed into a tree less than three blocks from the Newell home.
“Unfortunately, these are the types of things that can occur when young people drink,” Whitted said. “This was one accident that didn’t have to happen.”
Whitted said the Newells didn’t procure the alcohol for about a dozen teenagers gathered at their home but were present “off and on” and were legally responsible for activities at their residence. Police are still working to determine the source of the alcohol.
Police are awaiting toxicology results from Zadina’s Oct. 1 autopsy.
