LINCOLN — Nebraska second baseman Pat Kelly’s two-run single sparked a five-run third inning for the White team, which earned a 9-7 win Wednesday in the second of three scrimmages this week at Haymarket Park.
The squads combined for 16 hits in 5Ĺ innings, spoiling the fall debuts of the two freshman right-handers — starters Colton Howell and Jeff Chesnut.
The Red team had a 4-2 lead going into the bottom of the third, but Kelly drove in two with a single to tie it with no outs. The White team scored three more times before the frame ended.
The game’s tying run was on base in the top of the sixth inning, but Red team catcher Taylor Fish grounded out to third base to end it.
Kelly, junior Ty Kildow, redshirt freshman Austin Christensen and sophomore Blake Headley each finished with two hits.
Nebraska’s Red-White series will conclude with the finale at 6 p.m. Thursday at Haymarket Park.
