YORK – Six Dukes will represent their school and community in this week’s Class B state tennis meet.
Matches begin at 8 a.m. Thursday and continue through the finals in first singles, second singles, first doubles and second doubles on Friday afternoon.
Leader of the Duke pack is Jared Miller at second singles where the senior’s sparkling 26-6 record earned the tourney’s No. 2 seed.
“Just last week he beat the No. 1 seed, so he obviously has a shot,” said Coach Dan Malleck. “I would say that any of the top six seeds could win it in this bracket.”
By virtue of his high seed, Miller gets a first-round bye before meeting either Devin Carey of Beatrice or Matthew Amao from Mount Michael Benedictine in Match 56.
At first singles is senior Creighton Loreman, unseeded with a record of 8-16 through the regular season. Loreman’s first opponent will be Brian Doll of Gering in Match 10. Waiting for the winner will be No. 2 seeded Jordan Nash (29-2) of Adams Central.
At first doubles for York is Taylor Andrews and Charlie Briggs, also unseeded at 12-18.
Andrews and Briggs start their state bracket in Match 28 with Michael Byrne and Trey Martinez of Ralston, the 10th seed at 14-8.
Logan Cobb and second doubles partner Hayden Sandall, 8-13 in 2012, are also unseeded as is their opening opponent. The first test for Cobb and Sandall comes in Match 35 against Blake Wilberger and Logan Woodward from Scottsbluff.
Alternate players for York are Tyler Odom and Jonathan Postier.
Even though only Miller was seeded, Malleck said all the others have “a shot to pick up some points in the early rounds.”
Frontrunners for team trophies aren’t much different than any other state tennis tourney.
“The team favorites are the usual suspects, which would include Elkhorn South, Pius and Skutt,” Malleck predicted.
The meet will be played at the Abbott Sports Complex on the northeast corner of Lincoln.
