COLUMBUS — The Chadron girls golf team posted its highest finish in over two decades at the Class C state tournament on Tuesday at Quail Run Golf Course in Columbus.
The Cardinals, who were making their fifth straight appearance at state as a team, finished fourth with a two-day score of 794. Chadron carded a 400 on Tuesday after shooting a 394 during Monday's opening round.
“We were happy with fourth,” Chadron coach Curt Holmquist said. “Today's weather was at least 20 degrees colder and a lot windier. So, we had to battle all day just to golf as well as we could. A couple of girls improved their scores and a couple were right around what they had the previous day.”
Bridgeport also earned a top-10 finish in the team standings. The Bulldogs finished in ninth with an 854. After opening with a 456 Monday, Bridgeport followed that up with a 398 on Tuesday.
Grand Island Central Catholic won the team championship with a 746. Ogallala finished second with a 751 and Norfolk Catholic ended third with a 784.
Chadron was led to its fourth-place finish by senior Kelli Haynes. Haynes, who finished third last year, medaled for the second straight year by placing fifth with a 175. She shot two consistent rounds of 88 on Tuesday and 87 on Monday.
“For Kelli to medal fifth was quite an accomplishment,” Holmquist said. “She was in the top group both days. I know she wanted to finish higher, but she didn't golf badly at all. She just couldn't catch any breaks. It's just one of those things that happens in golf. She should feel really proud of winning another medal.”
The only other local medalist was Bayard junior JaLee Pilkington. Pilkington finished in a tie for 11th with a 190. She shot a 97 during her final round after opening with a 93 on Monday.
Also for Chadron in the tournament, Cali Crile finished 32nd with a 204, Taylor Strotheide placed 35th with a 206, Kortney Hageman ended in a tie for 37th with a 209 and Haleigh Shuck finished in a tie for 71st with a 229.
Haynes and Strotheide are the only seniors for the Cardinals.
Bridgeport was led to its ninth-place finish by senior Tara Harding. Harding placed in a tie for 21st with a 198. After opening the tournament with a 108, Harding lowered her score by 18 strokes with a 90 during the final round.
Bridgeport senior Jada Huck also enjoyed plenty of improvement between her rounds to finish in a tie for 28th with a 202. Huck opened with a 109 and followed that up with a 93.
Also for the Bulldogs in the tournament, Breanne Franklin placed 70th with a 228, Kimberly Mueller finished in a tie for 71st with a 229 and Cassidy Mitchell was 77th with a 232.
Mitchell's Emily Snyder competed individually in the tournament. Snyder, who was making her first state appearance, placed in a tie for 24th with a 200. She lowered her score by eight shots by shooting a 96 on Tuesday after opening with a 104.
Also competing individually was Kimball's Brooke Hager. Hager finished in a tie for 28th with a 202. She opened with a 104 before carding a 98.
