Bellevue woman conquers another food challenge
Molly Schuyler may become a household name if she keeps completing local food challenges in record times: The Bellevue woman just conquered her third in two months, this time at the Old River Pizza Company in Council Bluffs.
Schuyler is, once again, the first woman to even try to eat the Big Axe Calzone, five pounds of food. She finished in 11 minutes and 23 seconds, stealing the record from her main competition in eating contests, professional eater Randy Santel of Overland Park, Kan.
In August, Schuyler became the first woman to take down the Stellanator, the well-known food challenge at Stella's Bar and Grill. A few weeks later, she took down Sinful Burger's “Goliath” Challenge: five pounds of food that includes a giant burger and a pound of fries.
The 32-year-old Schuyler took Santel's record in the Goliath Challenge, finishing in 17 minutes and three seconds. Santel still holds the record for the fastest Stellanator. He finished the challenge in seven minutes, 26 seconds. Schuyler finished in 15 minutes.
Sinful Burger owner Jim Nearing is setting up a Goliath faceoff between Schuyler and Santel, with proceeds going to charity.
Omaha Hooters location looks to be closed
Omaha's Hooters is closed.
According to its Facebook page, the restaurant at 12405 West Center Road ceased business because of a dispute between the building owners and franchise operators.
"Hooters is not done in Omaha," the post reads. "Hopefully in a few months, we'll be able to make an announcement, but unfortunately for now this is where we stand."
There is one other Hooter's in the area, at 2910 23rd Ave. in Council Bluffs.
Comfort Food Classic benefits Ted.E. Bear Hollow efforts
The sixth annual Comfort Food Classic is this weekend.
Each year, the classic focuses on one dish, and this year it's enchiladas. Chefs from around the city will prepare their best interpretation of the enchilada as part of the fundraiser for Ted E. Bear Hollow, a nonprofit group that offers a variety of free grief-support services for children, teens and adults, including support groups, day camps and retreats.
Attendees will taste each chef's rendition of enchiladas and vote to determine which recipe is the best. They can also enter to win a number of prizes and bid on silent auction items.
This year's participating chefs are Lance Wang of O Dining; Nick Katis of Julio's; Cedric S. Fichepain of Le Voltaire French Restaurant; Shaun Webb of Cantina Laredo; Chase Thompsen of Taxi's Grille and Bar; and Matt Lewandoski of Urban Wine Company. The winning chef will take home $500, a traveling trophy and bragging rights.
Last year, the classic focused on lasagna. It brought in more than $60,000 for charity, setting a record.

Fall flavors featured at chocolaterie
Chocolaterie Stam is debuting a new line of fall-themed candy.
The “Harvest Bounty” collection features gluten-free seasonal flavors available for a limited time.
The shop also is serving seasonally flavored coffee drinks, such as pumpkin spice and cinnamon mocha, and gelato in fall flavors such as pumpkin pie and caramel apple.

New items at Tommy Colina's
Tommy Colina's Kitchen has launched new menu items for lunch and dinner.
The restaurant is now serving “munchers,” a selection of new appetizers that includes chicken satay, onion rings, queso dip and other snacks. Street tacos come in four flavors: chimichurri, shaved tenderloin served with an olive oil and herb chimichurri sauce; Moroccan, chicken with a yogurt sauce; Calcutta, tenderloin with a curri sauce; and Shanghai, chicken with a honey mustard sauce and Chinese noodles.
The menu also has three new steak burger options and new salads, wraps, seafood and chicken tender baskets. The restaurant also now offers more than 20 beers.

New PepperJax coming to Lincoln
PepperJax Grill is opening in downtown Lincoln.
The Nebraska-based fast-casual restaurant is opening at 1339 O St. It has another Lincoln location at 27th Street and Pine Lake Road.
The new restaurant is expected to open in November.
PepperJax sells Philly sandwiches, rice bowls, wraps and salads. There are eight PepperJax restaurants in the Omaha area, along with restaurants in Lawrence and Overland Park in Kansas.
The chain has plans to open locations in Sioux Falls, S.D.; Des Moines; Kansas City; St. Joseph, Mo.; and Grand Island.
Lot 2 planning family dinners
Family dinners are on the menu this fall at Lot 2 in Benson. Starting in October, the restaurant will have a once-a-month, three-course family style meal that will include an appetizer, entree and dessert and will be priced at $29 per person. Wine or beer pairings can be added for an additional cost.
The first family dinner takes place Oct. 21 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., and reservations are recommended.
The restaurant is in Benson, at 6207 Maple St.
Gretna cafe gets new location
D&K Gretna Cafe has a new location at 20596 Hwy. 370.
Owners Diane Saigh, Holly Hummel and Heather Mowinkel moved because of plans to construct a car wash in the same building where the cafe was previously located.
The new location will have the same staff and hours: 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday and 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday.
