A former Anita, Iowa, teacher has been given a four-year suspended prison sentence and will be required to undergo sex offender treatment after pleading guilty to sexually exploiting an elementary-school-age girl.
William Foulkes, now 65, also must register as a sex offender for the next 10 years.
Court documents allege that Foulkes touched a student's private areas during 49 tutoring sessions while the girl was in fifth and sixth grades. He worked for the Anita school district at the time of the abuse.
The incidents took place between August 2009 and Nov. 11, 2010, at Anita Elementary School, Foulkes' home and Lake Anita State Park.
As part of an agreement, Foulkes pleaded guilty on Sept. 4 to two aggravated misdemeanor counts of sexual exploitation by a school employee. One felony count and 47 misdemeanor counts against him were dismissed at sentencing.
Foulkes' plea was on the condition that his prison sentence be suspended and that he be placed on supervised probation, said Cass County Attorney Daniel Feistner.
As part of his two-year probation, Foulkes must successfully complete a residential sexual offender treatment program.
The Anita district reorganized in 2010 with the C&M district of Cumberland and Massena to form the CAM school district.
