OGALLALA — The Chadron and Bridgeport girls golf teams earned berths into the state tournament with top three finishes at the Class C, District 5 Tournament on Monday at West Winds Golf Course in Ogallala.
Chadron finished runner-up with a second-best season score of 365 and Bridgeport was third with a 428. Ogallala won the team title with a 357.
Chadron senior Kelli Haynes led the Cardinals by winning her fourth consecutive individual district title with a 78.
“Kelli played pretty smart golf today,” Chadron coach Curt Holmquist said. “The girls played really well. To shoot at or near our best at this time of year is quite a tribute to the girls for staying with it and practicing hard.”
The second-place finish earned Chadron its fifth straight trip to state.
Joining Haynes in medalist contention for the Cardinals were junior Kortney Hageman and senior Taylor Strotheide. Hageman finished in fourth place after shooting a season best 88, while Strotheide tied for 10th with Brooke Hager of Kimball with a score of 98.
“Kortney played her best round of the season today and Taylor’s 98 was about average for her,” Holmquist said. “Everything clicked for the team. As a coach, it was fun to watch the girls have success around the course.”
Juniors Cali Crile (101) and Haleigh Shuck (115) will also be making the trip to state for the Cardinals.
Bridgeport is going back to state for the third time in the last four years. Senior Tara Harding led the Bulldogs with a seventh-place finish after shooting a round of 94.
Also for Bridgeport on Monday, senior Jada Huck had a 103, sophomore Cassidy Mitchell shot a 115, junior Kimberly Mueller finished with a 116 and Breanne Franklin totaled a 120.
Other local individual state qualifiers included Mitchell’s Emily Snyder and Bayard’s JaLee Pilkington.
Snyder, a sophomore, placed fifth with a 92. Pilkington, a junior, finished eighth with a 95.
Holmquist said the competition in the tournament was very good.
“Ogallala was on their home course, so we knew they were going to be really tough,” he said. “Bridgeport has been golfing some good scores. We’ve probably been at about four or five tournaments with them. They’ve got us a couple of times and we’ve got them a couple of times, so we knew that could potentially be a dogfight. You just never know. It’s just one of those things where you are happy for the team. However we get there, we will get there with smiles on our faces.”
The Class C state tournament will be held next Monday and Tuesday at Quail Run Golf Course in Columbus.
Tee times for all of the state tournaments will be released today and can be viewed at www.nsaahome.org.
