The Sporting News has picked Creighton’s Doug McDermott to its preseason All-America team.
A consensus All-American as a sophomore, the 6-foot-7 forward averaged 22.9 points and 8.2 rebounds last season. McDermott is the only consensus All-American returning this season.
Others picked to the Sporting News’ team were Indiana’s Cody Zeller, Ohio State’s Deshaun Thomas, Lehigh’s C.J. McCollum and North Carolina’s James Michael McAdoo. The team was picked by the Sporting News editorial staff in consultation with coaches and scouts from around the country.
Fans will get their first chance to see McDermott and his teammates when Creighton holds “Bluejay Madness” on Oct. 12, the first day of practice for Division I men’s teams.
The event, which will be held at the D.J. Sokol Arena, will begin at 8 p.m. and last for about 90 minutes. The Creighton men’s and women’s teams will be introduced and hold short scrimmages. There will be a 3-point shooting and dunk contests.
Creighton men’s coach Greg McDermott and women’s coach Jim Flanery will make brief comments about their teams.
Admission is free, seating in general admission and the doors will open at 7:15 p.m. Players from both teams will sign autographs at the event’s conclusion.
