LINCOLN – A possible prelude to the Class B state tournament brought out York senior Jared Miller’s best tennis on Saturday at Lincoln Pius X.
Miller swept through opponents from Ralston (6-1, 6-0), Pius X (6-4, 6-0) and Grand Island Central Catholic (6-4,6-0) before taking second behind champion Zahler Zandt from Elkhorn South.
Z.Z. might have taken the buzz out of Miller’s title plans 7-5, 6-1; but it was still an impressive showing at this elite Class B event.
“This 15-team meet was somewhat of a prelude to the state meet,” coach Dan Malleck confirmed. “Jared Miller played by far his best tennis of the year to finish runner-up at No. 2 singles.”
The Dukes tallied 13 points overall and tied Elkhorn Mount Michael for eighth place. Elkhorn South earned the team championship (44 points) ahead of runner-up Lincoln Pius X I (30 points).
Hastings Adams Central (25 points), Elkhorn (23) and Grand Island Central Catholic (23) completed the top five.
The Dukes received other points as their No. 1 doubles team of seniors Charlie Briggs and Taylor Andrews rallied for a 2-6, 6-0, 6-4 victory over Waverly. They lost a quarterfinal to Grand Island CC (6-1, 6-0), but recovered to beat Lexington 8-1.
Ralston ended the duo’s tournament with an 8-2 win in consolation semifinal action.
York’s No. 2 doubles featuring sophomores Tyler Odom and Hayden Sandall won an 8-4 consolation match over Kearney Catholics. They also pushed Columbus to three sets, yet those foes discovered a 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 victory.
Elkhorn eventually swept the No. 2 team, 8-0.
The Dukes moved on to play at today’s Columbus Invitational. They’ll be getting ready to host a second York Invitational of this season on Friday starting at 10 a.m.
