ADEL, Iowa — Doctors told Jordan Grove there was no way he would play this season.
If only they could see him now.
Class 3-A’s leading rusher had another big night Friday against No. 4 Lewis Central. He scored five touchdowns, including two that put the game away, in No. 7 ADM’s 43-24 win over the Titans.
The senior had 184 rushing yards and two TDs on the ground. He had 154 receiving yards and two TDs through the air. His interception return for a score with 7:58 left sealed the victory.
“He’s a tremendous running back,” Titan coach Jim Duggan said. “And that is a darn good football team.”
Grove tore the ACL, MCL, PCL and meniscus in his knee and fractured the kneecap in ADM’s 3-A semifinal loss to Union at the UNI-Dome last November. He had surgery in December and vowed that he’d be back by this year’s season-opener.
“I just set my mind to it,” he said. “Football is my passion. I just worked tremendously hard.”
Grove’s 84-yard touchdown on a screen pass late in the first quarter gave the Tigers (5-0) a 13-3 lead. The Titans (4-1), who suffered their first loss, rallied to go up 17-13 at the half on two scoring passes from Austin Simmons — one to Luke Harrison and one to Jake Rodgers.
ADM, now 3-0 in district play, went ahead for good when Grove found the end zone twice in the third quarter. The second, a 2-yard run, came after one of three L.C. turnovers.
The Titans pulled within two at 26-24 when Simmons connected with Harrison again late in the third. And L.C. had a chance to stop the Tigers on downs to open the fourth quarter.
ADM faced a fourth-and-8 at the Titan 22 after a false-start penalty, but Kyle Herrick hit Tate Jensen at the sticks to pick up the first down. Grove scored from 18 yards out on the next play.
He then stepped in front of Harrison to intercept a Simmons pass on the ensuing L.C. possession. Grove raced 39 yards to the end zone to give ADM a 16-point advantage at 40-24.
The Titans were playing their first full game without star Alex Reed, out with a broken collarbone.
“We just didn’t make enough plays,” Duggan said. “No excuse. We just got manhandled.”
The victory was the second straight for the Tigers over a higher-ranked team. ADM upset Creston on the road a week ago. Now, it will face a dangerous Atlantic team on the road next Friday.
“Every game we play is like a playoff game,” Tigers coach Mike Whisner said. “That’s fun to me.”
