WAVERLY – The York Dukes were missing one key tennis player and placed sixth among eight teams at Friday's Waverly Invitational.
“(Senior) Creighton Loreman was unable to play today, so we had to re-shuffle our lineup somewhat,” coach Dan Malleck explained. “Tyler Odom did a nice job in his first varsity action, and Logan Cobb got some great experience through ‘baptism under fire' at the No. 1 singles spot.”
Cobb scored four points and placed ahead of Beatrice's No. 1 player.
Odom joined sophomore classmate Hayden Sandall at No. 2 doubles and delivered five points for a fourth-place finish. They outscored duos from Waverly, Nebraska City, Omaha Brownell-Talbot and Beatrice.
Senior Jared Miller's third-place No. 2 singles finish led the Dukes' 21-point effort. Only the Elkhorn South and Waverly players were able to outscore Miller among eight competing.
York's No. 1 doubles combo of seniors Taylor Andrews and Charlie Briggs also tallied six points while finishing sixth. Despite Loreman's absence, the Dukes were only two points behind host Waverly for a top five team finish.
The complete team standings: 1. Elkhorn South 47, 2. Omaha Skutt Catholic 35, 3. Lincoln Christian 33, 4. Omaha Brownell Talbot 30, 5. Waverly 23, 6. York 21, 7. Beatrice 14, 8. Nebraska City 13.
The Dukes continue a busy Homecoming weekend in today's power-packed Lincoln Pius X Invitational.
York also duals host Columbus on Monday before the second York Invitational of this season Friday beginning at 10 a.m.
