In recognition of October as the National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, area Zumba instructors are sponsoring the third annual Pink for Life event, a fundraiser to help the fight against breast cancer.
The event is Oct. 6 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Omaha Sports Academy, 11726 Stonegate Circle. It will feature local and guest Zumba instructors, including two from Papillion’s 24-Hour Fitness.
Papillion resident Jennifer LaMontagne said the fitness event is a great way for the community to give to those in need, as well as giving back to the community through the fitness aspect.
“We really do have a very supportive community,” she said. “We’re so thankful for the Zumba fanatics.”
The three-hour fitness event costs $20 per ticket, with proceeds going towards the Nebraska Chapter of the Susan G. Komen Foundation, a foundation well known for its breast cancer awareness cause.
“We are really passionate about Susan G. Komen and finding a cure,” said Elle Spencer, a 24-Hour Fitness instructor and Pink for Life event organizer.
She said the event is as much about fitness as it is about sharing that passion.
The event will also include some male Zumba instructors, Spencer said, to show men that the cardio workout is not reserved for women only. Breast cancer awareness is important for men as well, she said.
“We want the guys to know that Zumba is for them too,” she said. “Breast cancer is not just a woman’s disease; it does affect everybody.”
Both of the local instructors said they want to encourage everyone to come out, bring a friend, dance some calories off and donate to a good cause.
While there will be dancing for three hours, participants can work at their own paces and levels. The event will also include snacks, activities and a raffle.
Tickets will be available the day of the event, but registration is encouraged.
