There's something about drinking beer after biking that gets people excited.
Lucky Bucket Brewing Company in La Vista will host its second annual Lucky Bucket Bike Ride Friday night.
A record 300 people signed up to pedal 12 miles around Lake Wehrspann in Chalco Hills Recreation Area.
“It's a social, fun activity for people in Omaha,” said organizer Ben Kalhorn of Lucky Bucket. “It's something different. It's a way to get your friends out, to do something active rather than just going to a bar.”
Registration opened the first week of September. It sold out in three days.
“We were surprised,” Kalhorn said. “Last year we only had 100 riders. This year it will be triple the size.”
Park officials limited the event to 300 people because the area could not accommodate additional riders. Organizers plan to move to a new site for the 2013 ride to make room for a larger crowd but have not chosen the location. Kalhorn estimates at least 500 people will sign up next fall.
He suspects moving the ride from a Saturday to Friday helped boost the ride's popularity. “It was scheduled during a Nebraska football game last year,” he explained.
The race will start by the Natural Resources Center, near 156th Street and Giles Road (the northwest corner of Lake Wehrspann). After the 12 mile ride, participants can ride another two miles to the Lucky Bucket Brewing Company at 11941 Centennial Road in La Vista for the after party.
Anyone can attend the after party for $5. There will be a DJ, food for sale, yard games, and, of course, Lucky Bucket beer. Those who signed up for the ride can redeem two drink tickets, included in the registration fee, for free beer or soda.
You must be at least 21 years old to attend.
Lucky Bucket also hosts an annual running event in May.
