LINCOLN — The University of Nebraska at Omaha and Bellevue University are among the best American colleges and universities at serving veterans, according to a new college ranking of military-friendly schools by GI Jobs magazine.
It is the fourth year the magazine has released a military-friendly schools list. The magazine reviewed more than 12,000 Veterans Administration-approved colleges and universities to compile its list of the top 15 percent. More than three dozen campuses in Nebraska and Iowa were included on the list.
The magazine researches campus military support, academic credibility, size of military enrollment, academic credits given for military service, flexibility for military students, veteran graduation rates, tuition assistance, employment rates and military spouse policies in evaluating whether a campus is friendly to military students.
Both Bellevue University and UNO serve a significant number of veterans and were rated highly by veterans who reviewed the schools on behalf of the magazine. Both institutions work with military students to help them continue their education even after they are deployed and do not penalize those whose studies are interrupted by deployment.
Bellevue, a private nonprofit university located practically on the doorstep of Offutt Air Force Base, counts 2,686 military or veteran students among its 10,304 students, or about 26 percent of its enrollment, acccording to the magazine.
Bellevue is described as “mission focused, career advancing, military friendly and a leader in adult learning.”
UNO has 1,084 military or veteran students among its 14,712 students, or 7 percent.
“UNO has a long history working with military students, including presence on Offutt Air Force Base since 1950 and creation of a degree program to specifically meet military student needs,” the magazine website reported.
Other Nebraska campuses recognized for their military-friendly environments include Creighton University, Grace University, Metropolitan Community College, and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, to name a few. Iowa examples included Iowa State University, the University of Iowa, the University of Northern Iowa and Drake University.
