Carl J. Fosberg Sr.
Omaha Specialist 5, U.S. Army
Served from October 1963 to November 1969.
Memory: “After basic and advanced training, I was sent to Germany. I was in the 21st Infantry supporting the Berlin Brigade, whose duties were patrolling the borders between East and West Berlin and Checkpoint Charlie. I returned to the States for additional training for quartermaster heavy equipment repair and was assigned to the 556th Light Maintenance Company at Fort Bragg, N.C.
“Our unit was deployed for special operations in Kanchanaburi, Thailand, to build a training camp for the Royal Thai Army Volunteer Forces, also known as the Black Panthers. They would then be trained and sent to Vietnam as U.S. allies. One year later, I went to Vietnam for 12 months.
“I was discharged in November 1969 and came home to Omaha. My wife and I were host to the 556th LMC ‘Band of Brothers' 2012 reunion in Omaha, honoring our commander, Capt. Dale Davis, who took our unit from Fort Bragg to Thailand.”
