Omaha Marian defensive back Maddie Elliston had her pick of some of the best soccer programs in the country.
In the end, it was the family atmosphere and the community service done by the Nittany Lions that tipped the scales to Penn State.
Eighth-ranked Penn State is coached by Erica Walsh, an assistant for the U.S. women's team at the FIFA World Cup in Germany.
“A lot of it was the staff, I just felt right at home, like a family,” Elliston said.
She also liked the facilities.
Elliston, a junior, said her other finalists were Notre Dame, Maryland and North Carolina. She also visited Wake Forest.
Elliston plays for the Elite Girls Academy Booyah team and has been invited to several U.S. national camps. She's been a member of the Region II ODP team since 2009.
Elliston played on her brothers' teams until she was in junior high. She was on the All-Nebraska second team last year.
She's listed 15th, with a four-star rating, on the Topdrawersoccer.com girls national top 150.
