Wohlner's Neighborhood Grocery & Deli's location in Aksarben Village has been chosen as the site of the third Omaha “cash mob,” an event where shoppers are encouraged to spend about $20, meet new people and have fun supporting a local business.
The “mob” is planned from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the grocery store at 2289 S. 67th St.
The Omaha Local Independent Business Alliance started the cash mobs in June to drive sales, boost membership in the alliance, and encourage shoppers to support local businesses. The first two events were at the Bookworm bookstore and at Candy Wrappers candy shop.
“A cash mob is a creative way to get people involved in supporting local businesses,” said Meredith Gardner, OLIBA communications coordinator.
Wohlner's owner Mike Schwartz, whose grandfather Albert Wohlner started the business, said he's excited but not sure what to expect with a cash mob. He was unable to attend the first two but said he plans to attend future mob events.
“My expecations are high,” Schwartz said. “I'm just excited and I really do want to see who's coming.”
He said it was “tremendous” to have been chosen for the event by the alliance.
“It's nice to see everybody making a statement that we are supporting local businesses. It's nice to keep the money in the Omaha area.”
