Bonnie Raitt recently took a year off.
She was worn down, not from years of making music and touring, but from personal tragedies.
Raitt's parents passed away in 2004 and 2005 and her brother passed away in 2009.
“I knew I wanted to take a year off, and it was really a great thing to have that chance to fall apart,” she told the Edmonton Journal.
She came back with “Slipstream,” her 2012 album that American Songwriter called “her best album in years.”
Raitt only co-wrote one of the 12 songs on the new album, and she said she's looking forward to writing some new material.
“I didn't write much in the past decade, either, so I'd like to do more next time if I can find something to write about that's not unraveling my own personal story too much,” she told Billboard. “I feel like I did a lot of that in the '90s, so I'd like to say something different now. And I get so many great songs by writers I love, I feel like whatever I do has to stand up to those, which is a pretty high standard.”
