The second year of high school football games on “Thursday Night Showdown” includes 11 teams that are in The World-Herald's preseason Classes A and B ratings.
The 7 p.m. games can be seen on Omaha station KXVO (Channel 15, Cox Cable Channel 11) and on The World-Herald's NEPrepZone.com.
“We're very excited about the schedule,” said Matt Kelly, the executive producer. “Since we got a late start a year ago, we were limited in what we could show last year.”
The nine-week package begins Thursday with Class B No. 7 Omaha Skutt hosting No. 5 Gretna in the first game on the new synthetic turf at Moylan Field.
Gretna and defending Class B champion Elkhorn each will be shown twice. The Class B No. 1 Antlers host Gretna on Oct. 11, then are the visiting team for the regular-season finale Oct. 18 against No. 10 Elkhorn South.
Other ranked teams are No. 2 Millard South, No. 4 Millard West, No. 5 Papillion-La Vista and No. 9 Omaha North in Class A and No. 2 Crete, No. 4 Beatrice and No. 9 Omaha Gross in Class B.
Omaha Creighton Prep, Lincoln East, Omaha Bryan, Omaha South and Ralston also are included in the schedule.
“After schools saw what last year looked like for production quality and how it went, a lot of people wanted to be a part of this year,” Kelly said. “Several schools agreed to move games from Friday to Thursday for us.”
Kelly again will join analyst Todd Doxzon, the former Millard North and Iowa State quarterback, in announcing the games. The sideline reporter will be Erin Sorensen.
Six cameras, including one for the scoreboard clock, will be used. Kelly said not many tweaks needed to be made to the production.
“We're not adding a bunch of different elements,” he said. “We'll keep it simple and do what we do well.”
Kelly said the live streaming video on NEPrepZone.com is “a perfect relationship between us and The World-Herald.”
“When we did our preview show at Skutt,” he said, “there were a handful of kids come up and said they were excited to be on TV again because they had family members last year watch their game on the live stream.”
