DICKINSON, N.D. — PI Midwest (Omaha Creighton Prep) put on a hitting clinic Sunday, rolling to a 25-1 win over Edina (Minn.) in an elimination game of the American Legion Central Plains Regional.
Coach Pat Mooney’s squad must win two games Monday to advance to the Legion World Series that begins Friday in Shelby, N.C. PI Midwest will play at 11 a.m. and then again at 2 p.m. if it wins the first game.
PI Midwest (47-8) led 3-1 after two innings but struck for 10 runs in the third. After scoring twice in the fourth, the team from Prep added 10 more in the seventh to bring on the 10-run mercy rule.
“That 10-run third busted it wide-open for us,” Mooney said. “They didn’t have much pitching left after that.”
The final line tally for PI Midwest was 25 runs, 24 hits and two errors. Edina, which committed six errors, had 10 hits but just one run.
Creighton recruit Taylor Elman, making his first start of the tourney, was the recipient of all that offense and went the distance to get the seven-inning win.
Evan Ryan drove in four for PI Midwest while five others — Elman, Cale Dineen, Kevin Connolly, Alex Meisenbach and Scott Huber — each had three RBIs.
Dineen, Ryan and Connolly also scored four runs apiece.
PI Midwest sent 14 batters to the plate in the third inning, which began when Jon Hechtner reached safely after an infield error. Ten runs later, the inning finally ended when TJ Wood struck out.
Fourteen more batters marched to the plate in the seventh, which was highlighted by a three-run homer by Meisenbach. Dineen also had a two-run triple in the inning.
Starter Harrison Egly, who pitched 213 innings, took the loss for Edina.
“It was nice to get this win,” Mooney said, “but we’ve got our work cut out for us tomorrow.”
