LINCOLN — The wife of Lt. Gov. Rick Sheehy has filed for divorce, stating that her marriage of 28 years is “irretrievably broken.”
Connie Sheehy filed for divorce late Wednesday in Adams County.
She and her husband, an announced Republican candidate for governor in 2014, live in Hastings, Neb.
They were married Sept. 2, 1983, in Lexington, Neb., and have two college-age children.
Sheehy, 52, was in Chicago on Thursday attending a meeting of the National Lieutenant Governors Association, of which he is the current president.
He said through a spokeswoman that the divorce was “truly a personal issue between Connie and I.”
Sheehy served as mayor of Hastings until January 2005, when he was tapped by Gov. Dave Heineman to take the $75,000-a-year job of lieutenant governor.
In that post, Sheehy has led Homeland Security efforts in the state and earned a reputation for his willingness to travel to official events, logging 60,000 miles a year in his personal car.
