DES MOINES, Iowa — Adrian Cardenas sent the Omaha Storm Chasers to their third straight loss Sunday as teams head to the All-Star break.
The Iowa second baseman hit a walk-off single off Omaha reliever Vin Mazzaro to break a 5-5 tie. The Chasers' three losses have all been decided by one run.
Mazzaro retired the first two Cubs he faced in the final inning before Alfredo Amezaga singled and stole second base. Dave Sappelt pushed him to third with an infield single and Cardenas singled to right to end the game.
In the opening inning, Omaha's Max Ramirez doubled in two runs to mark the fifth time in six games that the Chasers scored first. Kurt Mertins pushed the lead to 3-0 in the second with a solo homer.
Iowa tied it in the bottom of the fourth off Blake Lalli's sacrifice fly.
Omaha starter Mike Montgomery, who hasn't won in six starts, gave up two runs in the fifth inning, including one on a balk. The left-hander gave up four earned runs while striking out six in six innings.
Ramirez pushed another run across in the sixth inning with a double. The designated hitter finished 2 for 4 with three RBIs.
Third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff scored on a misplayed ball by Cardenas to tie the game in the seventh inning. Iowa reliever Alberto Cabrera recovered to pick up the victory. He gave up two hits while striking out five in the final 223 innings.
Omaha will return to action Thursday for its sixth straight game against the Cubs. This time, the teams will meet in Omaha and play a four-game series.
