Six of Nebraska football's nine commitments for the 2013 recruiting class likely will to play defense. The Huskers will likely add six or seven more defensive commits. HuskersIllustrated.com projects NU will add three more linemen, one or two linebackers and up to three more defensive backs.
Here are the top guys on Nebraska's board:
• 1. Joe Mathis (6-foot-4/250 pounds, 4 stars, Upland, Calif.): Given commitments from A.J. Natter and Christian Lacouture, Nebraska appears to be in good shape at defensive end, but it doesn't have a player like Mathis on its roster. He's a versatile athlete with coverage skills who can switch between defensive end and linebacker.
It'll be a long process to land Mathis. He almost committed to USC in February, but the Trojans have fallen out of favor a little because they wanted him to consider defensive tackle. Michigan and Washington are the other members of Mathis' top group.
Mathis said he'd announce at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in January, but it's likely that he'll delay the announcement until late January or even signing day.
