Knocked on the door during the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials, finishing third in the 200 backstroke and fourth in the 400 IM. He was only 19, however, in that first trip to Omaha and just completing his freshman year at Michigan. Clary's continued development led to a silver in the 400 IM and bronze in the 200 back at the 2011 world championships. Challenge for Clary is the presence of competitors such as Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte and Matt Grevers in his signature events.
The only U.S. swimmer in the 1896 Athens Olympics was Gardner Boyd Williams. Accustomed to warm American swimming pools, his first event at the Games after diving into the bitterly cold Mediterranean Sea was over almost immediately. In a split second, his head reappeared and he yelled, “Jesu Christo! I'm freezing!” before he lashed back to the boat. For him, the Olympics were over.
