Healthy change for markets

Eight neighborhood markets have received makeovers as part of Live Well Omaha's "Healthy Neighborhood Stores" Program, which aims to provide healthy food to people all over the city.

Selena's Market, at 33rd and California Streets, is the latest store to restock its shelves with healthy, affordable food choices for people who live in the surrounding neighborhood.

The other stores that have received makeovers include J-N-J at 42nd and Bedford, J-N-D at 24th and Redick, Cubby's Bennington location, Phil's Foodway at 30th and Ames, La Guera at 24th and G, Nena's at 24th and O and Afoma Corner Store at 30th and U.

The Douglas County Health Department tracked data on heart disease, diabetes and other health issues, pinpointed the areas at greatest risk and identified eight stores to participate in the program.

"Certain pockets of our community are nutritionally fragile," said project spokeswoman Sarah Schram. She said the area around Selena's Market and the other markets are "food deserts" — neighborhoods where healthy, fresh food choices are slim.

And the frenchee for March is ...

Reuben lover alert: The featured frenchee for March at B&G Tasty Foods is filled with corned beef and kraut. Through the end of the month, the restaurant, at 79th Street and West Dodge Road, will be serving up a Reuben frenchee based on the classic sandwich. It runs $5.99. Past special frenchees have included turkey and cranberry with a side of gravy; apple and brie; and Nutella and banana. For more information, visit http://bgtastyfoods.com/frenchee.

Benson bar is a Beercade

Guys (and gals) who love playing retro video games while drinking a glass of craft beer, take note: Beercade is opening in Benson in March.

The bar will have more than 30 retro arcade games and 18 craft beers on tap. Games will include Street Fighter Alpha, Final Fight and Cruisin Exotica, among others.

The bar also will have cocktail tables featuring multiple games and skee-ball.

Rock along with preshow specials

The Zin Room, across the street from the Orpheum Theater in downtown Omaha, is running a number of preshow specials during the run of "Rock of Ages."

The specials, which continue at the restaurant through Sunday, are themed to go with the show, and include a $5 "Rockin' out" cocktail, $3 glasses of Castle Rock Pinot Noir and the restaurant's steak bite appetizer for $6.

Top-10 chef in line for 'best' title

Omaha Chef Clayton Chapman continues to rack up accolades. Earlier this week, Food and Wine Magazine nominated the Grey Plume's frontman as one of the top 10 Midwestern chefs in its "The People's Best New Chefs" contest.

The magazine chooses its top 10 chefs from a number of regions around the country and then asks the public to vote for the one it likes best.

In its write-up about Chapman, the magazine says he's amazing because "despite being only 25, he's cooking with vision, sophistication and spirit."

It names his must-try dish — rabbit with baby spinach, oyster mushrooms and pickled shallots — and gives him credit for making his own butter and roasting beans for the Grey Plume's house-made coffee.

South American wines on the menu

Lo Sole Mio is having a South American wine dinner.

Slated for March 21 at 6:30 p.m., the five-course dinner will take place at the restaurant's Villa banquet room.The dinner is $70 per person, including tax and tip, and reservations are required.
