LINCOLN — Jeff Jamrog said Nebraska has a better feel for how a staggered spring football practice schedule will work after going through one for the first time in 2011.
The Huskers will practice on March 10, 12 and 14, then head to spring break before returning on March 26 for their final 12 workouts.
Jamrog, NU's assistant athletic director for football operations, said the staff was somewhat concerned with retention a year ago when the break followed three days of installation.
"But we were very pleased when the kids came back and started right back up," he said. "We thought it went well."
Under this format, Nebraska has time to evaluate the first three practices and also tend to some recruiting needs. In past years, Jamrog said, NU also had to worry about players returning in good shape when practices started after spring break.
The Huskers' spring game is scheduled for April 14.
Nebraska finalizes non-league slate
Jamrog said Nebraska has finalized its last nonconference game for the 2012 season but won't announce it until at least next week.
NU is waiting to release the Sept. 22 opponent along with some opponents for the 2014 and '15 seasons. BYU is considered one of the possibilities for the future schedules.
A look at the Huskers' nonconference schedules through 2016:
• 2012: Sept. 1, vs. Southern Mississippi; Sept. 8, at UCLA; Sept. 15, vs. Arkansas State; Sept. 22, open.
• 2013: Aug. 31, vs. Wyoming; Sept. 7, at Southern Mississippi; Sept. 14, vs. UCLA; Sept. 21, vs. South Dakota State.

McShay: David has nose for ball
ESPN analyst Todd McShay said he notices the same things about former Nebraska linebacker Lavonte David as others: "Every time I watch tape he's around the football, and that's what I like about him."
McShay spoke about David during an ESPN teleconference this week and also addressed the chatter that some NFL teams might see the 6-foot-½, 225-pounder as a possible safety.
"He just seems to have a nose for the ball," he said. "The big question, obviously, is does he have the size to play outside linebacker? How's he going to do getting off of blocks and consistently disengaging and making plays when he has to be in a phone booth?"
McShay said David would be a good fit at the weakside linebacker in a Tampa 2-type scheme. He ranks him as the fifth- or sixth-best outside linebacker in the draft and said "probably in the third round" when asked about his draft prospects.
David put up huge numbers in two seasons at Nebraska, making a school-record 152 tackles as a junior and 133 as a senior. He led the team last season with 13 tackles for losses, and also forced three fumbles and intercepted two passes.
David will next go to the NFL Combine with former NU teammates Alfonzo Dennard, Jared Crick and Marcel Jones.
Former Husker McDermott fined $100
LINCOLN — Colin McDermott, a former Nebraska football walk-on, was fined $100 after pleading guilty to a careless driving traffic citation in Lancaster County Court Wednesday.
McDermott, a fullback out of Omaha Creighton Prep, is no longer with the Husker program.
According to a police report, McDermott walked home after driving a 2009 Smart car over a patch of ice and failing to navigate a curve on Dec. 11. He was cited on suspicion of leaving the scene of an accident.
