The Army Corps of Engineers has awarded contracts for Missouri River levee repairs near Bellevue, Plattsmouth and Nebraska City.
A $4.7 million contract to Newt Marine Services of Dubuque, Iowa, is to repair scour holes, construct seepage berms, repair slopes and seed ground cover on five miles of levee southeast of Nebraska City.
The repairs involve a stretch of levee, in place since 1950, that protects an Omaha Public Power District coal-fired station. The work is scheduled for completion by March 1.
A $43,000 contract to Next Phase Environmental of Underwood, Iowa, is for seeding on the levee between Bellevue and Plattsmouth.
The levee protects about 3,000 acres of land, including part of Offutt Air Force Base, farmland, residences and businesses. Work is scheduled for completion by March 15.
The levees were damaged during last year's summerlong flood.
