Guilty verdict in child sex case

WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER

A judge found an Omaha man guilty of one count of sexual assault of a child and six counts of child pornography for the repeated assaults and photographs of a young girl.

Douglas County District Judge Patrick Mullen made the finding Tuesday after Newman chose to have his case tried before a judge rather than a jury.

Stewart O. Newman, 40, faces 15 years to life in prison for first-degree sexual assault. He faces 3 to 50 years in prison on each count of manufacturing child pornography. He will be sentenced in April.

The girl testified that Newman had assaulted her several times. Newman admitted that he took pictures of the girl and touched her but contended that he never penetrated her.

“To suggest that he was careful about penetration is just absurd,” Mullen said.

Newman and his wife had been associated with a youth ministry that operated out of, but was not affiliated with, King of Kings Lutheran Church.

He and his wife have since divorced.
