Casino bill is killed

By Paul Hammel
WORLD-HERALD BUREAU

LINCOLN — Scratch off "casino gambling" as an issue for state lawmakers this year.

A legislative committee killed a proposal Monday by a 5-1 vote that would have allowed casinos in Nebraska if neighboring states didn't share their gambling profits.

State Sen. Paul Schumacher of Columbus had introduced the proposal constitutional amendment to allow casinos.

He said Nebraska is losing millions of dollars to neighboring states in casino bets made by Cornhuskers, and the simplest way to recover that lost revenue is ask for it.

His plan would have required voter approval and would have allowed casinos in Nebraska only if neighboring states like Iowa declined to share.
