Suspicious powder spurs evacuation

A Mutual of Omaha warehouse in Blair was evacuated Wednesday morning when a white powdery substance was discovered in a piece of mail.

Lt. Aaron Barrow of the Blair Police Department said employees at 9330 U.S. Highway 133 reported the suspicious powder about 9:15 a.m.

The Omaha Fire Department's hazardous material team analyzed the powder and declared it safe, and employees returned to work at about 10:30 a.m., Barrow said. The evacuation was called for by the company, not public safety authorities.

The Blair Police Department and Blair Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the call.

Barrow said the article of mail and powder were turned over to the U.S. postal inspector for further investigation.
