School computer hacking probed

Douglas County sheriff's deputies are investigating the case of a Millard student who reportedly disrupted his high school's computer network over a three-day period.

Chief Deputy Marty Bilek said no arrests had been made in the incident involving a student from Horizon High School.

Bilek said investigators are trying to determine whether a crime was committed and whether any grades or school records were changed.

Amy Friedman, a spokeswoman for the Millard school district, said only that officials are cooperating with the investigation.

According to a search warrant, the student disrupted the high school's computer network intermittently from Jan. 9 through Jan. 12 with the aid of a software application on his cellphone.

Staff members were unable to use their computers for work purposes, and outgoing Internet traffic was redirected to the student's cellphone.

The student later showed the school's information technology employee how he did it, according to the warrant.

Before school officials realized it, the student then deleted the application and restarted the cellphone, leaving it password-protected and inaccessible to school officials.

Investigators obtained the warrant Jan. 24 to search the cellphone.
