A 20-year-old Bellevue man was killed Tuesday night after a pickup truck in which he was a passenger struck an embankment, went airborne and came to rest overturned on a ramp leading from Interstate 680, Omaha police said.

The driver of the truck, Tyler J. Robar of Omaha, was taken to the Nebraska Medical Center with a head injury. He was being held early Wednesday for observation.

Police do not believe his injuries are life-threatening.

Police believe Robar, 23, had been drinking. Officers found beer cans in the truck. Investigators also believe, based on accounts from witnesses, that speed was a factor, Sgt. Douglas Klein said.

The dead passenger, Charles M. Brown, was ejected and was pronounced dead the scene, police said.

The 2000 Ford F-150 was southbound on I-680 about 6:20 p.m. Police said witnesses told them the truck was swerving in and out of traffic. Near the Pacific Street bridge, the Ford tried to pass on the inside shoulder and struck a southbound 2011 Subaru that was in the inside left lane.

The collision caused the Ford to swerve across four lanes of southbound I-680 before it crashed, Klein said.

The Subaru's driver, Lynette M. Allen, 43, of Bellevue, maintained control and pulled over on the left shoulder, Klein said. She was not injured.

All but one lane of southbound I-680 was closed until about 11 p.m. as officers probed the crash.
