New members of the Omaha Symphony Guild Debutante Ball Committee made their debut Jan. 17 at the Happy Hollow Club.
Kim Lubeck, 2012 Debutante Ball chairwoman, announced that Denise Fitzgerald will serve as associate chairwoman. New to the committee are Donna Foley, Julie Fritz, Anne Jetter, Kyle Nelson and Brigid Wilkening.
Past and present chairwomen and committee members were invited to the kickoff luncheon, which was organized by former Deb Ball committee chairwoman Ann Marie Abboud.
Tables for the luncheon were adorned with centerpieces overflowing with pink peonies and tulips and orange roses. Orange crush table linens and fuchsia napkins tied with lime green polka dot ribbon added an elegant splash of color to the room.
A chicken breast stuffed with creamed spinach, sugar snap peas, fresh bakery rolls and bread puddings were served for lunch.
Karen German, past chairwoman and new adviser for the committee, thanked members for a successful year of fundraising for the Omaha Symphony Guild in 2011. The proceeds from the annual event provide cultural exposure and educational programs in Omaha and southwest Iowa communities.
The next ball is set for Dec. 27. Names of the 2012 debutantes and stags will be announced this spring.
Committee assignments, in addition to Lubeck, Fitzgerald and German, are Sandra Davidson, arrangements chairwoman and social chairwoman third year; Patty Jansen, underwriting chairwoman and arrangements associate; Foley, community files, yearbooks and invitations chairwoman; Shelley Homa, debutante chairwoman and treasurer associate; Nelson, debutante associate and reservations associate; Joy Watanabe, decorations chairwoman and underwriting associate; Jetter, decorations associate and publicity, photography & scrapbook; Tracy Jerkovich, presentation chairwoman; Wilkening, presentation associate, stag associate and social chairwoman first year; Kim Banat, program and data chairwoman; Cathy McNamara, data associate and reservations chairwoman; Fritz, printing chairwoman and treasurer; and Anne Baxter, stag chairwoman and social chairwoman second year.

A steering committee meeting for the Kicks for a Cure event was held Monday at the University of Nebraska Foundation office.
The seventh annual soccer exhibition weekend will be held April 20-21.
A youth soccer skills clinic for underprivileged youth conducted by participating teams will be held April 20 at Creighton University's Morrison Stadium.
The Kicks for a Cure Dinner will be held April 20 at the Double Tree Hotel and will feature an auction, dinner and awarding of the Liz Karnes Memorial Scholarship.
On April 21, men's and women's high school and collegiate teams will compete at Morrison Stadium. Women's matchups will feature Westside High School versus Skutt Catholic High School and Creighton University versus University of Nebraska at Omaha. Men's matchups will be Westside High School versus Bellevue East and Creighton University versus Denver University.
Envisioned in 2004 by Dave Karnes and Steve and Amy Lindsay, the first event was held in 2006. Kicks for a Cure has raised nearly a million dollars for cancer research — $918,000 in six years.
Grants from funds raised are awarded each year by Kicks for a Cure to support cancer research initiatives at the University of Nebraska Medical Center's Eppley Cancer Center and Creighton University's Hereditary Cancer Center.
Amy and John Deardorff and Cindy and Brian Leiferman are event chairmen. Karnes and daughters Korey, Kalen, Kara and Laurel will serve as honorary chairmen.

The annual meeting and recognition luncheon of the Methodist Volunteers In Partnership was held Jan. 17 at Happy Hollow Club.
Outgoing president Kathy Wilson recapped the accomplishments of VIP during her term as president, which included two major fundraisers: the 2011 Methodist Women's Hospital Golf Classic last August and Operation Mask-querade, a benefit for the Methodist Hospital Surgery Renovation and Expansion project, held in October.
From these events and gift shop revenues, $230,000 was raised to go toward the Methodist VIP's $1 million commitment to the Methodist Hospital Foundation's Defining Moment campaign.
New officers are Terri Sortino, president; Jeanie Owen, president-elect; Suzanne Kotula, secretary; Kirsten Hosman, treasurer; Lisa Freeburg and Gina Girard, vice presidents; and Wilson, adviser.
Members-at-large are Judy Allgood, Glynnis Dittrick, Tamara Giitter, Nancy Hultquist, Beth Koukol, Lida Koukol, Gretchen Mack, Maureen Mahoney, Marilyn O'Gara, Melodee Thompson and Janet Truelsen.
After the annual meeting, awards were presented to various VIP members and Methodist staff for their service.
The 2011 honorees were Truelsen, who received the Mrs. Wade Martin Award; Doug and Michele Grewcock, the Honorary Lifetime VIP Award; Gretchen Mack, the Edith Clark Spirit of Volunteering Award; Dr. William Shiffermiller, the Goodwill Award; Roger Hertz, Friend of the VIP Award; Gina Girard, Friend of the Board Award; Michelle Erickson, Jerry Hoban and Doug Thompson, Special Service Award; and Pat Camenzend and Marion Titze, Gallery of Service 20-Year Award.
VolunTeen Scholarships were presented to Christopher Davidson, Greg Decker, Christine Hacker and Hannah Verboon from Methodist Hospital; and Madelyn Peterson, Emili Schulz and Amy Soderquist from Methodist Women's Hospital.
