As forecast, the northern lights put on a spectacular show at the top of the world this week, as winds from a powerful solar storm blew past Earth.

Early on, there was hope that people as far south as Nebraska and Iowa would be able to see the display Tuesday night. But that didn't prove the case. Rodney Viereck, a scientist with the Space Weather Prediction Center in Boulder, Colo., said declining geomagnetic conditions reduced visibility. And had the lights been there, cloud cover would have obscured them.

Folks in northern states such as Michigan were luckier.
