Assurity Life Insurance Co. of Lincoln will dedicate its new $53 million headquarters today, the first major private building in the city's Antelope Valley development project.
In a 3:30 p.m. ceremony, company executives and local officials will cut a ribbon on the 175,000-square-foot office building at 2000 Q St. The 9.5-acre site also has a 600-space, six-level parking garage.
The insurance company moved last month into the first four floors, with the fifth occupied on a long-term lease by the Physicians Network of St. Elizabeth Health Systems. Assurity's 400 staff members had been located in three other offices in Lincoln.
Tom Henning, Assurity's chairman, president and CEO, said the new building will help jump-start downtown development and is a long-term investment in Lincoln's business community. It was designed by Clark Enersen Partners and built by Sampson Construction.
Hennnig said the Assurity Center will be the first large office building in Lincoln to receive "gold" certification under the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system of the U.S. Green Building Council. Its features include a "green" roof with plants to reduce heating and cooling, underground storage for runoff water and landscaping with drought-tolerant plantings.
Located just south of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Beadle Center, the building is a milestone for the $250 million Antelope Valley project, which is designed to address flooding problems caused by Antelope Creek. A concrete drainage system with walking paths and other features now lines the creek, with property available alongside for future development.
