Omaha City Councilman Garry Gernandt is frustrated by the seemingly constant battle with vandals tagging his district with graffiti.
Gernandt said Wednesday that while touring his district last week, he noticed that vandals had tagged the Spring Lake Park pool and bathhouse. He said it appears more than one vandal spray painted all four sides of the bathhouse at 4020 Hoctor Blvd. as well as the east wall of the pool liner.
"I'm in a constant state of frustration over this (graffiti) problem," Gernandt said. "It seems like we just get one area cleaned up and (vandals) strike again."
Gernandt said he has notified the Omaha City Public Works Department; he said the city's graffiti van might have to repaint the entire bath house.
"When the pool is open and occupied, it's fairly safe," he said. "Once the thing is closed down (for winter), it becomes an instant target. It seems like these people know when no one is going to be around."
Kayleen Young, graffiti abatement coordinator for Omaha, said because the Spring Lake Park pool is in a “very secluded location,” it won’t be repainted right away.
“It’s sad to say, but I know that if we were to paint it today, by Monday we would need to do the whole thing over again,” Young said. “It takes 10 or 12 gallons of paint every time we redo that bathhouse.”
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 402-444-STOP.
