Project work begins at Carter Lake

Work was to begin early this week on the next step in an extensive plan to improve Carter Lake and its water quality.

Brad Richardson, project coordinator for the lake’s restoration, said a contractor was to begin hauling in rock that would lead to shoreline work. Dredging of the lake is set for June and July, he said.

Part of the shoreline work, Richardson said, will involve some spot vegetation kills with chemicals and use of a weed harvester. The weed harvester will help clear shoreline growth, which should improve boating and fishing.

“It’s progressing, it’s moving along,’’ Richardson said of the restoration project. “It’s a good thing for Carter Lake and a good thing for Omaha.’’

Richardson and other officials updated the public last week on the project during a meeting at the Metropolitan Area Planning Agency headquarters in Omaha.

The $6.5 million improvement project started in 2006 and has involved cooperation among several eastern Nebraska and western Iowa local agencies. — Jay Withrow
