DONIPHAN - The last time the Ord wrestling team won a conference championship was in 1999, when it was in the Central Conference.
Thirteen years later, the Chants are now champions of the Lou-Platte Conference.
Thanks to five champions and three other medalists, Ord took home its first Lou-Platte Conference Tournament title by scoring 143 points Saturday at Doniphan-Trumbull. The Chants finished 6.5 points ahead of runner-up Adams Central.
"It means a lot to win this for the kids and I'm proud of what they did today," Ord coach Derry Trampe said. "We won all of our matches in the finals today and got three pins out of those. We looked real good. We wrestled with a sense of urgency today. We did the things we needed to do."
Geoff Foth (138 pounds), Dusty Staab (152), Johnny Ference (170), Devin Cronk (220) and Clayton Lange (285) were champions for the Chants, while Clinton O'Neel (third, 106), Cole Svoboda (fourth, 160) and Taylor Miller (fourth, 195) were other medalists.
Foth said winning a conference title is a good feeling.
"We have been working really hard for this," he said. "We finally got it and it feels really nice."
Foth, ranked No. 2 at 138, earned a 6-2 decision in the final over Doniphan-Trumbull's Heath Maurer, who is No. 4. Foth cruised in jumping out to a 5-0 lead after the second period.
"That was the best match I've seen him wrestle this season," Trampe said. "I think if he continues to wrestle like that, we have a chance to do something special."
Staab won 152 with a 1-0 win over St. Paul's Quintin Mrkvicka, while Ference made quick work of Kearney Catholic's Jacob Daake in pinning him in 10 seconds at 170. Cronk and Lange each pinned their opponents to win 220 and 285, respectively.
Trampe said this was a much better feeling than on Tuesday, where the Chants dropped a 38-36 dual to Ainsworth. He said it was a little bit of a wake-up call.
"We had such a disappointing dual with Ainsworth Tuesday and I don't think the kids liked that too well," Trampe said. "I think the last three days have been the best practices I've seen. They were focused and ready to go today."
Adams Central, meanwhile, had no champions but did have 10 medalists. Dylan Gilliland (second, 113), Errich Holston (third, 120), Erik Rostvet (third, 126) Derek Lonowski (second, 132), Tyler Joseph (third, 138), Cody Gilliland (second, 145), Cole Rostvet (third, 160), Chaz Janssen (fourth, 170), Alex Meier (third, 182) and Jesse Lincoln (third, 195) were Patriots who brought home hardware.
Adams Central was without a few wrestlers, including returning state champion Christian Barry (No. 3 at 126) and Logan Klein (No. 5 at 220).
Patriot coach Dan Lonowski said he liked what he saw despite missing those wrestlers.
"We had a lot of young kids step in and actually perform pretty well," Lonowski said. "We had 11 in our lineup and brought home 10 medals. Even though we didn't have a champion, we battled well today. Hopefully we can get those kids back and healthy."
