    Q&A: UNO Winger Johnnie Searfoss

UNO winger Johnnie Searfoss, a sophomore from Colleyville, Texas, skated for UNO coach Dean Blais with the USHL's Fargo Force before following him to the Maverick program last season, when he scored nine goals and recorded 13 points as a freshman. He has two goals and 10 points in 22 games this season, including one goal and two assists in UNO's most recent action, Dec. 30 and 31 against Quinnipiac.

    * * *

Q: You played on a newly-formed line against Quinnipiac with Brent Gwidt and Alex Simonson, and you were a productive unit. How did you feel about the way you guys played?

A: I thought we played well as a line. I played on a line with Gwidt for a half-season last year, so I knew we'd have some chemistry, and Simonson is a really hard worker. We played well, put up some goals and played well defensively as well.

Q: Joe Krause (a forward) joined the team right after the Christmas break after working for a year and a half to become eligible. What does he bring to the team?

A: It's great to have him with us. He's a great character player, and he brings a lot of spark into our locker room. He's a great kid and he'll do anything for the team. Everyone loves him and we're excited he's out there with us now.

Q: You and Tony Turgeon are roommates, what do you guys do when you have some down time?

A: We have our TV shows on Sunday nights. Other than that we just kind of hang out and relax.

Q: What's your favorite TV show?

A: 'Dexter.' We love it. We're obsessed.

Q: Andrej Sustr (a native of the Czech Republic) went home with you over the Christmas break. How did that go?

A: It was a lot of fun. He likes to travel a lot, so it was exciting for him to see a different part of the U.S. We went to some Dallas Stars games, showed him around downtown and all that stuff. I think he had a good time and spent some good time with my family.

Q: Do you miss being in the Dallas area?

A: I lived there for 18 years, before I went away for juniors, and I like it a lot there, but it's too hot for me in the summers. I haven't been home in the summer for the last two years.

Q: Even with the humidity here, you like it better than the summers there?

A: I was just sick of it. The air is thicker here, but it's 100 degrees or higher there every day.

Q: Having played for Dean Blais in juniors, do you know him better than anybody?

A: When I played for him in juniors, he was the same guy. Same philosophy, everything is the same. Now he's just coaching older guys.

Q: What are your expectations for this team for the rest of the season?

A: We have really high expectations. We want to win the WCHA. That's our first goal. Whatever happens after that, we'll worry about it then.

Q: Do you feel like you're in a good position to win the WCHA?

A: If we can take care of (Minnesota-)Duluth and Minnesota, because they're ahead of us, those will be huge weekends. We can definitely win it if we take care of those two teams, but obviously we've got to worry about the rest of the games, too.
