Temperatures likely to rise

The roller-coaster ride of temperatures along with a dry spell of no snow are expected to continue throughout the week in the Omaha area, forecasters say.

Becky Kern, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service Office in Valley, Neb., said Monday that a steady climb toward high temperatures near 60 later in the week should be followed by highs in the 30s by the weekend.

Today, temperatures should top out in the lower 30s with a bit calmer northwest winds than what eastern Nebraska and western Iowa experienced Sunday, Kern said. The Omaha area can expect a low tonight in the mid-teens.

Conditions begin to warm after tonight, Kern said, with Tuesday's high in the low 40s and a low Tuesday night in the mid-20s.

Wednesday's high temperature should reach the upper 40s and Thursday's high is likely to hit the upper 50s, she said, with the high Friday dropping to around 50.

A cold front with no precipitation moves through by Friday night, dropping Saturday's high temperature to around 40 and Sunday's high to the upper 30s. A low of 14 is expected Sunday night.

The average daytime high temperature for early January is 33, Kern said, “and we've been well above that.''

She said “a number of factors have been combining'' to create the warmer conditions, including no snowpack. No snow on the ground allows temperatures to remain higher.

“We've a got a dry forecast for at least the next seven days,'' Kern said.
