NEW CLARKSON HOSPITAL GETS APPROVAL

Dec. 31, 1953: Bishop Clarkson Memorial Hospital was given permission to erect its proposed 250-bed hospital on the northeast corner of 44th Street and Dewey Avenue. The hospital was expected to cost about $3.5 million. It would be operated in conjunction with the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

1938: The city council approved the 90-day notice of sale contract submitted by the Nebraska Power company. The signers of the contract were selected by Mayor Butler. The council ratified the contract. The ratification resolution stated the council is not obligated in any manner, but "accepts any benefits accruing to it under the contract." The council's action was unanimous and there was no discussion. Mayor Butler said the city attorney had ruled the new contract is "legal and sufficient."

1994: The administrator for Educational Service Unit No. 9 said no decision had been made on whether to send special education teachers to Superior, Neb., schools in a controversy involving the schools' superintendent. Gil Feis said that the service unit board was considering the matter. Service unit attorney John Recknor earlier said Superintendent Dennis Mehlhaff was the subject of complaints that he acted inappropriately toward female teachers. Recknor said the service unit could refuse to send teachers to Superior unless the school board there fired Mehlhaff. The Superior School Board had no plans to fire Mehlhaff, board president Ed Meekins said. The board this fall found that Mehlhaff's behavior was not "sufficiently severe or pervasive to constitute sexual harassment in the legal sense."

2009: A State Patrol trooper found 7 pounds of gift-wrapped marijuana in a vehicle that ran off the road during a chase in Morrill County. The trooper had tried to stop the sport utility vehicle for failure to signal on U.S. Highway 385 near Angora. A short pursuit ended when the SUV turned into a cornfield and ended up on its side. The driver fled on foot but was captured later. A passenger remained in the SUV and was arrested. The patrol said the driver could face charges in connection with the chase and, in addition, he and the passenger could be charged with possession of marijuana with intent to deliver.
