For the first time in nearly 80 years, West Point, Neb.-based Wimmer's Meats will soon be operated by someone outside of the Wimmer family.
The maker of hot dogs and sausage products has been purchased by Land O' Frost, a Lansing, Ill., company that makes packaged lunch meats. The terms of the deal, which is expected to close within the next month, were not disclosed.
Land O'Frost will continue to operate out of Wimmer's facility in West Point and has no plans to change the Wimmer's brands, which also include Basset's, Ambassador and Fairbury, the “Official Hot Dog of Husker Nation,” said Jeff Becker, the company's manager of training and development.
Wimmer's was founded in 1934 by George Wimmer Sr. in Snyder, Neb., and moved to West Point in 1957. It currently employs about 130 people and is available in a half-dozen Midwestern states.
Land O'Frost employs about 1,000 people in Illinois, Kentucky and Arkansas. The company says it is the largest family-owned maker of packaged deli meat in the U.S.
