What are odds of a white Christmas?
The Midlands are in that portion of the country where a white Christmas is indeed possible, but not a guarantee. As a result, children who watch and wait have every reason to hope.
Here are the odds, in any given year, of at least one inch of snow on the ground on Christmas, based on records from the National Climatic Data Center.
Nebraska: Grand Island, 40 percent; Norfolk, 57 percent; North Platte, 33 percent; Omaha, 44 percent; Scottsbluff, 47 percent; and Valentine, 61 percent.
Iowa: Cedar Rapids, 39 percent; Des Moines, 50 percent; Dubuque, 62 percent; and Sioux City, 63 percent.
