DES MOINES — A researcher at Great Ape Trust has accused the center near Des Moines of abusing an infant bonobo and of making plans to move its apes to another facility.
Researcher Sue Savage-Rumbaugh's lawyer, William Zifchak, filed documents last week in U.S. District Court in Des Moines claiming someone at the center slashed the heels of an infant bonobo so he wouldn't stand upright.
Savage-Rumbaugh also contended a staffer said the bonobos would be moved to Georgia State University.
Trust lawyer Jaki Samuelson disputed the allegations and said there are no plans to relocate the apes.
A hearing is set for Dec. 20.
The trust is home to seven bonobos and two orangutans.
